Gearing up for cold weather outdoors

Bien s'équiper pour affronter le froid en outdoor

Winter transforms nature into a vast, enchanting playground… but it doesn’t forgive carelessness! To fully enjoy your outdoor adventures despite the freezing temperatures, good equipment is essential. Here are our tips for staying warm and safe without sacrificing your enjoyment.

1. Layer intelligently

The secret to facing the cold? The three-layer technique:

  • Base layer: a breathable garment that wicks away moisture (avoid cotton!).

  • Mid-layer: an insulating layer to retain warmth (fleece, light down jacket…).

  • Outer layer: a waterproof and windproof jacket to protect you from the elements.

Adjust these layers according to your activity and intensity of effort.

2. Don't neglect your extremities

Hands, feet, head… These are the body parts most sensitive to cold. Remember to:

  • Wear warm gloves (and possibly glove liners).

  • Choose good wool socks and insulated shoes.

  • Wear a beanie, neck gaiter, or balaclava to prevent heat loss.

3. Opt for suitable materials

Invest in quality technical clothing:

  • Merino wool for base layers.

  • Fleece or down for insulation.

  • Gore-Tex or equivalent membranes for waterproofing.

These materials offer comfort, breathability, and protection, even in extreme conditions.

4. Pack safety equipment

In winter, the weather can change quickly. Remember to bring:

  • A headlamp (days are short!).

  • An appropriate first aid kit.

  • Water and energy snacks.

  • A light stove to warm your drinks or meals if needed.

5. Listen to your body

Even well-equipped, pay attention to your body's signals: numbness, unusual fatigue, thirst… In winter, dehydration and hypothermia can occur faster than you think.
