Fall Bivouac: Practical Tips

Bivouacking in Fall: Practical Tips

Autumn is a magical season for bivouacking: landscapes are adorned with flamboyant colors, trails are quieter, and the crisp air makes every awakening even more invigorating. But bivouacking in autumn requires a little more preparation than in summer!

Here are our practical tips to fully enjoy your nights under the tent this autumn.

1. Choose your equipment carefully

When temperatures drop, you need to focus on:

  • A sleeping bag suitable for cold weather (comfort temperature around 0°C or less)

  • An insulating mattress to prevent heat loss through the ground

  • A 3 or 4-season tent capable of withstanding wind and rain

Tip: invest in a bivy bag or a thermal liner to gain a few precious degrees.

2. Dress in layers

The golden rule: layer up!

  • 1st breathable layer (wicks away perspiration)

  • 2nd insulating layer (fleece type)

  • 3rd windproof and waterproof layer

Also remember to bring a hat, gloves, and warm socks — essential even in autumn.

3. Opt for warm and energetic meals

In autumn, your body expends more energy to warm up.
Favor:

  • High-calorie meals (pasta, rice, rich freeze-dried dishes)

  • Hot soups to rehydrate and warm up quickly

  • A good thermos of tea or hot chocolate for morale!

4. Choose your bivouac spot carefully

In autumn, the weather can change quickly.

  • Avoid overly humid valley bottoms

  • Look for a slightly elevated spot to avoid condensation

  • Protect yourself from the wind behind rocks or trees (without setting up too close to avoid dead branches)

5. Anticipate humidity

Even in good weather, humidity is often present:

  • Ventilate your tent as soon as possible to avoid condensation

  • Protect your backpack and sensitive belongings in dry bags

  • Dry your wet clothes as soon as possible

Bivouacking in autumn means enjoying magical nights in the heart of golden landscapes, provided you are well-equipped and well-prepared.
