How to choose a sleeping bag for winter?

Comment choisir un sac de couchage pour l’hiver ?

When temperatures drop, having a good sleeping bag isn't just about comfort: it's essential for your safety and enjoyment when bivouacking!
But with all the models available, how do you choose?

Here are our simple and practical tips for choosing your winter sleeping bag.

1. Check comfort temperatures

Each sleeping bag indicates three key temperatures:

  • Comfort temperature: the temperature at which you will sleep well.

  • Limit temperature: the temperature at which you will start to feel cold but remain protected.

  • Extreme temperature: the temperature at which your survival is assured... but comfort is no longer there at all!

Our advice: Choose a bag whose comfort temperature is slightly lower than the temperatures you expect.

2. Filling: natural down or synthetic?

  • Natural down (feathers): ultra-light, very compressible, excellent insulation... but more expensive and sensitive to humidity.

  • Synthetic: heavier and bulkier, but remains insulating even when wet, and often more affordable.

Our advice: For dry and cold environments, prefer down. For humid conditions, synthetic is safer.

3. Weight and bulk

In winter, we tend to want something very warm... but also light!
Compare the weight/warmth ratios to find the right balance according to your type of outing (strenuous hike or a more relaxed bivouac).

4. Shape and practical details

  • Mummy shape: essential in winter to retain heat.

  • Adjustable hood: essential to limit heat loss through the head.

  • Draft collar: a real plus to prevent cold air from seeping in.

  • Zipper with insulated flap: to block air entry.

A good winter sleeping bag is a balance between warmth, weight, moisture resistance, and comfort.
Take the time to choose carefully according to your specific needs!
