Spring is here! The days are getting longer, the trails are becoming passable again, and the call of nature is beckoning... But before you rush out with your backpack, a crucial step is needed: the spring cleaning of your outdoor gear!
Here are our simple and effective tips to extend the life of your equipment and start fresh.
1. Get everything out... and inspect!
Start by getting all your gear out: backpack, tent, shoes, technical clothing, cooking pot... Do a quick visual check: stains, mold, damaged parts, sticking zippers, worn seams? Nothing will escape you.
2. Clean your technical clothing
Wash your waterproof jackets, fleeces, and trousers according to the instructions (often cold or 30°C, with a mild detergent). No fabric softener, it can clog breathable membranes! Also, remember to re-waterproof if necessary (spray or special wash).
3. Take care of your shoes
Brush them to remove dried mud, then wash them with lukewarm water and mild soap. Let them dry in the open air, away from the radiator. Then, apply a suitable care product (leather, Gore-Tex, etc.) to nourish and protect them.
4. Clean and air out your tent
Set it up in your garden or on your balcony, wipe it down inside and out with a damp cloth. Check the poles, pegs, and seams. If there are damp odors, let it air out for a whole day. Store it completely dry to prevent mold.
5. Check your backpack
Vacuum the inside, clean the straps and back with a damp sponge. Test the zippers, straps, and clips. If the fabric is dirty, a little hand wash will do wonders.
6. Check your accessories
Headlamp, stove, inflatable mattress, walking poles... Replace batteries, test proper functioning, re-inflate, lubricate if necessary. It's better to check now than in the field!
7. Store smartly
Once everything is clean and dry, store your equipment in a dry, ventilated place, away from direct light. Avoid airtight plastic bags that promote humidity.
And now?
Your equipment is ready, and so are you! All that's left is to plan your next adventures, with a light backpack and peace of mind.
