Our Anti-Heatwave Hiking Tips

Nos Conseils Anti-Canicule en Randonnée

Hiking in summer is a true delight: the sky is blue, the trails are dry, the landscapes are vibrant… But when a heatwave hits, it's best to be well prepared! To continue enjoying the pleasures of walking while taking care of your body, here are our best tips for safe hiking in the heat.

1. Start early (or very late)

During a heatwave, the sun beats down hard from late morning. The ideal? Set off at sunrise, when temperatures are still mild.
Not a morning person? Opt for a sunset hike — a magical atmosphere guaranteed, without the oppressive heat.

2. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate

It's no surprise, but it's vital: drink before you feel thirsty. Carry at least 2 liters of water per person, or more depending on the duration and intensity of the hike.
Tip: add electrolytes to your water to compensate for the loss of mineral salts.

3. Lighten your backpack as much as possible

In hot weather, every gram counts. Choose a light, well-ventilated bag, and only keep the essentials: water, snacks, map/GPS, first aid kit, sun protection.

4. Dress smartly

Forget tank tops! It's better to wear long, light, and breathable clothing that protects from the sun while allowing air to circulate.
Add a cap or wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses with UV protection.

5. Sunscreen + shade breaks = winning combo

Apply SPF 50 sunscreen from the start, and reapply every two hours. As soon as you find a shaded spot, take a break. Use it to catch your breath, drink, and cool down your body.

6. Cool down your body regularly

A small wet cloth, a misting spray, or even a scarf soaked in a spring: all means are good for lowering body temperature.
Some hikers even put an ice pack in their insulated backpack!

7. Know your limits and know when to stop

Dizziness, headaches, chills, or nausea? These may be the first signs of heatstroke. In this case, stop immediately, find shade, hydrate, and alert someone if necessary.

In summary…

The heat shouldn't spoil the pleasure of hiking, but it requires a little more vigilance. By following these tips, you can fully enjoy nature even in hot weather, while taking care of yourself.
