Hiking in the Jura: Landscapes and Secret Trails

Randonnée dans le Jura : paysages et sentiers secrets

Fellow adventurers, pack your bags! Today, we're heading to a destination too often underestimated but oh so fascinating: the Jura Mountains. Between sparkling lakes, deep forests, and modest peaks offering breathtaking panoramas, Jura trail hiking is an authentic experience that will charm nature lovers and those seeking tranquility.

The Jura: an invitation to a life-sized escape

The Jura massif is that gentle, undulating mountain range stretching along the Swiss border. Far from the Alpine crowds, it offers an enchanting interlude, an ideal playground for hikers seeking authenticity. Here, every step resonates with history, geology, and exceptional biodiversity. From dizzying ridges to glacial cirques, through verdant valleys and high-altitude lakes, the diversity of Jura landscapes is simply stunning.

I've had the chance to tread these lands many times, and each time, the Jura has managed to surprise me. It's a region best discovered at a slow walking pace, where you take the time to observe, listen, and breathe. Whether you're an experienced hiker or just a Sunday stroller, you're sure to find your happiness among the multitude of marked trails that crisscross the massif.

🏔️
The Jura, all year round! Don't underestimate the Jura outside of summer. Autumn is magnificent with its flamboyant colors, and winter offers unique snowshoeing or cross-country skiing opportunities, transforming the landscapes into true fairy tales. Just plan for the appropriate equipment!

Our Favorites: The Secret Trails of the Jura

While some routes are well-known, the Jura also abounds in less frequented treasures. That's where all the magic lies: venturing off the beaten path to discover unexpected panoramas, hidden waterfalls, or silent forests where time seems to stand still. Here are some of my favorite itineraries, those I share with my fellow adventurers.

🏞️
The Hérisson Waterfalls (long version)
Instead of the classic out-and-back, start from the Maison des Cascades and go up to the Saut Girard, then continue towards Lac de Bonlieu for a more demanding and less frequented loop on the upper part.
🌲
Crêt de la Neige via Combe des Amburnex
The highest point of the French Jura (1720m) is often approached from the Col de la Faucille. Prefer a wilder approach from the Combe des Amburnex, on the Swiss side. Total immersion in high-altitude forest, with an incredible view at the end.
💦
The Wild Tour of Lac de Chalain
Lac de Chalain is magnificent but very touristy. Forget the beaches and opt for a full tour, taking the forest paths that run along the less developed shores. Peaceful atmosphere guaranteed, with superb viewpoints.

For these excursions, good preparation is essential. I always bring my BaroudeurCamp 35L Backpack, ideal for a day or a weekend, and of course, my faithful BaroudeurCamp insulated water bottle to stay hydrated. Believe me, nothing is worse than running out of water in the wilderness! By the way, you can find our insulated water bottle on our website.

"The Jura is the art of getting lost to find yourself again, far from the hustle and bustle, at nature's pace."

Equipment and tips for a successful Jura hike

Going on an adventure is good. Going well prepared is better! The Jura, despite its gentle appearance, can hold surprises, especially in terms of weather. Here are my tips to make your Jura trail hike a pure moment of pleasure.

🎯Suitable shoes: High-cut and waterproof hiking shoes are essential, especially if you venture into wet or rocky terrain.
🎯Layered clothing: The weather can change quickly. Plan layers that you can easily add or remove (windbreaker, fleece, breathable t-shirt).
🎯Hydration: This is crucial! A good water bottle filled with water is your best friend. Remember to check for water points on your route if you're going for a long day.
🎯Food: Energy bars, dried fruit, sandwiches... Enough to recharge your batteries without weighing down your bag.
🎯Navigation: IGN map and compass (know how to use them!), or a hiking GPS. Don't rely solely on your phone; the battery might die, and network coverage is sometimes absent.
🎯Safety: First-aid kit, whistle, headlamp (even for a day trip, you never know!).

Don't forget to check the weather before you leave and to inform someone of your itinerary. Caution is always advised in the mountains, even in a massif considered "gentle" like the Jura.
