Ticks, mosquitoes: how to protect yourself effectively?

Tiques, moustiques : comment se protéger efficacement ?

When hiking, camping, or bivouacking, nature offers us its most beautiful treasures… but also its small pests. Between annoying mosquitoes and potentially dangerous ticks, it is essential to protect yourself well to fully enjoy your outdoor adventures.

Here are our best tips for effectively repelling ticks and mosquitoes — without spoiling your outing.

Why be wary?

  • Mosquitoes can cause itching, allergic reactions, and in some countries, transmit diseases.

  • Ticks, more insidious, attach themselves to the skin and can transmit Lyme disease or other infections if not removed quickly.

Good habits for protection

1. Use an appropriate repellent

Opt for an effective insect repellent containing DEET, Icaridin, or essential oils like lemon eucalyptus.
Tip: remember to reapply regularly, especially after sweating or swimming.

2. Wear protective clothing

In forests or tall grass, prefer:

  • Long pants and long sleeves

  • Light colors (ticks are easier to spot on them)

  • Socks pulled up over your pants

3. Avoid risky areas when possible

Stay in the center of trails, avoid tall grass and wet areas at dusk (mosquitoes' preferred time).

And for campers?

  • Treat your tent and sleeping bag with a special fabric insect repellent spray.

  • Use a mosquito net, especially if you sleep in a hammock or without a tent.

  • Light a citronella candle or a mosquito coil at the bivouac.

After the walk: check yourself!

When returning from a hike:

  • Carefully inspect your legs, arms, skin folds, scalp…

  • If you find a tick, remove it with a tick remover, without twisting, as soon as possible.

  • Monitor yourself in the following days: in case of redness or fever, consult a doctor.

In summary

An outing in nature can quickly turn into a nightmare if you neglect protection against ticks and mosquitoes. Fortunately, with the right actions and adapted equipment, you can set off with peace of mind!
