Headlamps and Lanterns: Our Buying Guide

Lampes frontales et lanternes : notre guide d’achat

Are you preparing for a bivouac, a trek, or simply a weekend in nature? Never underestimate the importance of good lighting. I remember a moonless camping night where, lacking a reliable lamp, I ended up cooking my pasta... by phone light. Not very practical, nor very safe!

Since then, I've learned to choose wisely between a headlamp and a lantern, depending on my needs. Here's a little guide to help you see clearly (no pun intended... well, maybe a little).

The headlamp: compact, practical, essential

If you can only bring one lighting system, choose a headlamp. It frees your hands, is easy to orient, and goes everywhere with you: night hikes, reading in the tent, outdoor cooking...

Opt for one if:

  • You're walking or cycling at night

  • You're bivouacking or light camping

  • You want mobile and targeted lighting

Things to check before buying:

  • Lumens (power): 200 to 400 lumens are sufficient for most uses. More if you're going to the mountains.

  • Battery life: USB rechargeable or battery-powered? A long-lasting battery is a real plus.

  • Lighting modes: strong/weak white, red (to avoid dazzling others), flashing...

My personal favorite: the Petzl Actik Core – powerful, lightweight, and rechargeable.

The lantern: to create an atmosphere and light up your surroundings

The lantern is ideal for lighting a fixed space: inside the tent, a camp table, or a campfire area. It diffuses a wider, softer light, often adjustable, and sometimes even suspendable.

Opt for one if:

  • You're camping with family or friends

  • You want ambient light for evenings

  • You're staying in a fixed spot

Things to check before buying:

  • Size and weight: some lanterns are collapsible or ultra-compact

  • Power source: battery, disposable batteries, or solar charging

  • Bonus features: USB port to charge your phone, hanging hook, water resistance

Tip: a small solar lantern can stay attached to your bag during the day and be ready to shine when evening comes!

So, headlamp or lantern? Why not both!

If you're going self-supported or trekking, a headlamp remains essential. But for more comfort at camp, a lantern is a real luxury. And neither takes up much space!
